The Moutan Tree Peony, or Paeonia suffruticosa, is a species of peony native to China that stands as a beacon of beauty with its dramatic, large flowers. Known as "mǔdān" in Chinese culture, where it holds significant symbolic value, this plant produces purplish, rose-pink, or white blooms that can span over 6 inches in diameter. Thriving in warm positions with rich, preferably limestone-based soil, the Moutan Tree Peony is the progenitor of numerous cultivars celebrated for their breathtaking beauty.

Beyond its visual appeal, the Moutan Tree Peony offers cultural, culinary, and medicinal benefits. Its fallen petals, considered a delicacy, can be sweetened and parboiled or incorporated into various dishes for a touch of elegance. Medicinally, the root and root bark are known for their many healing uses, making this plant as functional as it is beautiful. Cultivating the Moutan Tree Peony in your garden invites not only an air of sophistication but also a piece of cultural heritage and natural medicine.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Soak the seeds in water and let stand for 24 hours. Seeds that float will be viable. Seeds can be direct sown in fall for a spring germination. If sown at other times of the year, stratification is required (90 day warm stratification & 90 day cold stratification). Sow seeds 3/8" deep in well-draining soil, tamp down and place in full to partial sun. Keep moist until germination. Transplant after hardening off for a week.
