This brilliant yellow wildflower is a classic native variety that is very popular for native seed mixes because it is reliable and showy. The songbirds also love the numerous seed cones and forage on them into the cold winter months.
The leaves and stems are analgesic. An infusion is used to relieve the pain of headaches and to treat stomach aches and fevers. A decoction is used as a wash to relieve pain and to treat poison ivy rash.
Direct sow in late fall pressing into the surface of the soil. For spring planting, mix the seeds with moist sand and store in the refrigerator for 30 days before planting. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination which usually takes 3-4 weeks. The seeds can also be started indoors 8-10 weeks before planting in the spring. Keep seedlings lightly moist, and transplant them as soon as they have developed several leaves.
