Description:
If you enjoy tall, stately, dark perennials with fragrant flower spikes, consider starting Cimicifuga seeds and growing this remarkably beautiful plant. With intensely colored foliage of reddish purple and ivory white flowers, this is one perennial that creates a breathtaking display. Commonly called Bugbane, this dark foliage plant thrives in partial shade and moist, organically enriched soil. Bugbane plants are slow to establish and can take several years to reach their full height of 6 feet. Cimicifuga Bugbane needs consistently moist soil. Cimicifuga seeds do best with a cold, moist stratification.

Medicinal Properties:
Black cohosh is commonly used for women's ailments, such as menopause disorders, PMS, dysmenorrhea, and to facilitate labor in the last 2 weeks of pregnancy (best to consult an herbalist before using). It is also a remedy for rheumatism, bronchitis, tinnitus, and hysteria and is a known muscle relaxant. In Chinese medicine it is used for organ prolapses, headaches, measles, and sore gums due to superficial heat.

Recently black cohosh has become popular as an OTC remedy for relieving hot flashes in natural remedies for menopause.

Planting Instructions:
Bugbane is a challenging, yet extremely rewarding process that will have multiple stages if sowing indoors:

Sow Outside: Surface sow. Press slightly into the surface in autumn from fresh seed. Spacing 24 to 36 inches (60 to 90 cm). Keep seeds moist until germination. Oversaturation can lead to rot. Germination time: 12-18 weeks.

Sow Inside: Store seeds at roughly 60°F (16°C) for 6-8 weeks. Next, place in a freezer bag and stratify by refrigeration for two months. From there, sow seeds on the surface of lightly firmed, most seed compost in pots or trays at a sowing rate of 4-5 seeds per plant. Transplant outdoors spacing 24 to 36 inches (60 to 90 cm) following the last frost or in autumn. Germination time: one month to one year.
