Description:
Arnica montana is the Latin name for a perennial that grows 1 to 2 feet tall with bright, yellow daisy-like flowers that appear in July and August. It is found on the moist, grassy upland meadows in the hills and mountains of northern and central Europe and Siberia. It is also found sparsely in the northwestern United States. More common names for Arnica are mountain daisy, leopard’s bane, and mountain tobacco. Arnica can be used as an ointment, gel, or cream on unbroken skin or taken internally when it is diluted homeopathically. Today, Arnica has grown to be one of the most popular homeopathic medicines throughout the world. It is trusted by professional athletes to soothe sore muscles, by prominent cosmetic surgeons to relieve post-procedure pain, and by savvy parents to treat playground bumps and bruises.

Medicinal Properties:
Arnica is mostly used for external purposes in the form of oil or diluted tincture (although it is used internally in homeopathic form) for bruises, muscle or tendon strains or sprains, and stubborn inflammation when the skin is not broken. The highly diluted tincture is also used as a gargle for sore throats. The homeopathic tablets are taken for shock or trauma to body tissues or after an accident.

Planting Instructions:
Planting arnica isn’t difficult. Just sprinkle the seeds lightly on prepared soil in late summer, then cover them lightly with sand or fine soil. Keep the soil slightly moist until the seeds germinate. Be patient; seeds usually sprout in about a month, but germination can take much longer. Thin the seedlings to allow about 12 inches between each plant. You can also start arnica seeds indoors. Plant the seeds in pots and keep them in bright, indirect sunlight where temperatures are maintained at approximately 55 F. For best results, grow the plants indoors for several months before moving them to a permanent outdoor location after all danger has passed in spring.
