Description:
Meadow arnica is a native American species that will grow successfully in low-elevation gardens. A. chamissonis has been tested and is generally accepted as a substitute for Arnica montana. Use the yellow flowers at full flowering either fresh or dried, in compresses and salves as an external remedy on unbroken skin to reduce swelling and bruising caused by traumatic injury, and on arthritic joints. 20" perennial yields well with multiple flower stalks blooming for most of the early season. Surface sow, then stratify seed and give it light to germinate. Start indoors and transplant into humus-rich soil in full sun.

Medicinal Properties:
Arnica is mostly used for external purposes in the form of oil or diluted tincture (although it is used internally in homeopathic form) for bruises, muscle or tendon strains or sprains, and stubborn inflammation when the skin is not broken. The highly diluted tincture is also used as a gargle for sore throats. The homeopathic tablets are taken for shock or trauma to body tissues or after an accident.

Planting Instructions:
Planting arnica isn’t difficult. Just sprinkle the seeds lightly on prepared soil in late summer, then cover them lightly with sand or fine soil. Keep the soil slightly moist until the seeds germinate. Be patient; seeds usually sprout in about a month, but germination can take much longer. Thin the seedlings to allow about 12 inches between each plant.

You can also start arnica seeds indoors. Plant the seeds in pots and keep them in bright, indirect sunlight where temperatures are maintained at approximately 55 F. For best results, grow the plants indoors for several months before moving them to a permanent outdoor location after all danger has passed in spring.
