Wild Arugula (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) - 500 Seeds

•American grown seeds
•USDA Zones 4-9

Wild arugula seeds grow a far more tolerant and perennial relative to the common arugula or "garden rocket". Although still bright and peppery, wild arugula seeds deliver a far more complex and subtle profile compared to traditional culinary arugula, while still ready for harvest in about 6 weeks. And just like wild or "true" dandelion, wild arugula is a persistent perennial that has found its way into the kitchen as a mild and savory component to many leafy greens and salad mixes.

Culinary Uses:
Arugula is frequently served raw in salads. The peppery flavor pairs nicely with other strong flavors like salty cheeses, bright citrus, and more. It's also used to top cooked pizzas or whirled into pesto. The greens can also be sautéed for a mild side dish or added to soups, pasta, and other dishes.

Medicinal Uses:
Arugula is full of antioxidants -- compounds that can protect against or reverse damage to your cells. Arugula also has glucosinolates. These natural substances, which give arugula its bitter taste and strong scent, may protect you against certain cancers, including breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers. Arugula may also fight inflammation. It has ample vitamin K, which is good for your bones and may help prevent osteoporosis.

Growing Instructions:
Prefers germination temps of 45-65°, so direct sow wild arugula accordingly in full sun in cooler climates and partial shade in warmer areas, 1/4" deep and 6-12" apart in rows 12" apart. For continuous harvest, plant a new crop every 2-3 weeks until the heat of summer. Arugula tastes better when grown as a spring or fall crop since excess heat causes bitterness in the leaves. For a fall crop, plant the seeds in late summer after the heat has peaked. Arugula also grows well as a container plant or throughout winter in a greenhouse or a cold frame. Arugula can tolerate light frost, but if heave frost comes, provide protection for the plant. Keep arugula soil moist. Adding a layer of mulch can help with this.
