Description:
Once grown in Victorian English gardens, this unusual annual develops long, crimson tassels. In the language of flowers, it represents "hopeless love". It's actually a pretty variety of grain from the amaranth family. Amaranth is classified as a pseudocereal, meaning that it’s not technically a cereal grain like wheat or oats, but it shares a comparable set of nutrients and is used in similar ways. Its earthy, nutty flavor works well in a variety of dishes.

Planting Instructions:
Direct sow Love Lies Bleeding plant seeds when the outdoor temperature reaches 70°. Once the seedlings appear, thin them to 18-24" apart to allow for their tall growth. The seeds can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before planting. Sow just below the surface of a flat and keep the temperature and moisture consistent until germination. Transplant the plant as soon as the can be safely handled. Keep the young seedlings moist until well established. This plant will grow best in full sun and well drained soil. It tolerates drought conditions and poor soil, but it cannot grow in the shade. It makes an excellent container plant as well as adapts well to hanging baskets.
